PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT ACTION PLAN

Meeting of June 18, 2000 at the New Visions Conference, Leesburg, VA
Contact Persons: Peggy Boyles, Joy Renjilian-Burgy
Recorder: Eileen Glisan

Actions to be taken by this subgroup:

June Phillips and Eileen Glisan will design a letter (to be approved by the subgroup) in which we will remind institutions of higher learning that ACTFL, AATF, AATG, and AATSP all have established minimum levels of oral proficiency that beginning foreign language teachers should have. This letter will include a copy of these guidelines and will ask institutions to consider discussing the implications of these guidelines for their teacher preparation programs within their departments. We might ask: Have you seen these guidelines? Have you discussed their significance for your program expectations? Do you currently use them or an adaptation of them in your program's objectives?

Each person in the subgroup will send the letter out (on their own letterhead, and personalized in some manner) to at least twenty institutions in our geographical areas. We will keep track of the institutions that received the letter and hopefully track any action that they might have taken as a result of the letter.
