What should we do?
PRIORITIES
- JUNE 2000

NATIONAL AGENDA (National Task Force Recruitment and Retention) should:

  • Establish a collaborative; develop alliances; participate in related organizations.

RETENTION should:

  • Develop models for mentoring; support teacher compensation; seek other incentives that provide sufficient resources, facilities, and time.

INCENTIVES should:

  • Recommend to schools, universities, and industries financial benefits; career opportunities; family assistance and educational opportunities.
  • Establish a clearinghouse to link district/state/ACTFL incentives.
  • Identify alternate funding sources.

PUBLIC RELATIONS should:

  • Identify target audiences and messages relating to the value of foreign language teaching.
  • Collaborate in joint ventures and campaigns.
  • Organize publicity using prominent figures, slogans, and products in conjunction with other New Vision incentives to bombard the public.

REDEFINE THE CANDIDATE POOL should:

  • Include heritage speakers, native speakers from abroad, "early and late start" students, retired teachers, college apprentices and students, parents and para-professionals, bilingual teachers, Teach-For-America Clubs.

K-16+ COLLABORATION should:

  • Hire minority teachers who will recruit minority students.
  • Continue to advocate for all foreign language programs regardless of market forces.
  • Develop programs that link with universities abroad.
  • Recruit teachers abroad and introduce them to the American system of education prior to bringing them to the United States.
  • Broaden the definition of diversity to include issues of race and gender.
